In addition to mezcal flights and mezcal tasting, La Contenta will be offering a special shrimp-based menu, including ceviche, tacos and tortas. La Contenta will also be highlighting the Oaxaca Express, their signature cocktail brought to you by their head bartender, Alex Valencia.
The Oaxaca Express has a fun little history as recounted by Alex Valencia (bonus: the recipe as well!):
I remember my first days behind the bar. Spring 2006. Hell’s Kitchen. Sooner or later, you always get this, a request for a spicy drink. In my case it was for a spicy margarita, actually a jalapeño margarita. It was a mess! I muddled jalapeño slices and just added the sour mix along with a splash of orange juice. The customer sent the margarita back and ordered an extra dirty martini with jalapeño olives. Every time someone ordered a spicy drink, the fear of the customer returning the drink and ordering an extra dirty martini with jalapeño olives came to mind and I realized I had to do something! I eventually came up with THE OAXACA EXPRESS. Now for every hundred requests for a spicy cocktail, I get only one return!
The OAXACA EXPRESS
- 2 oz Montelobos Mezcal
- ¾ oz cucumber juice
- ¾ oz lime juice
- ½ oz jalapeño infused agave nectar
- Pinch basil.
